CHICAGO -- A civilian employee of the Chicago Police Department shot an attempted robber on the city's West Side.

The shooting happened just before 6 a.m. Monday in the 1300 block of South Sawyer Ave. in the Lawndale neighborhood.

According to a statement from the police department, the attempted robber approached the 57-year-old CPD employee, a detention aide, and the employee shot him.

The employee's girlfriend told WGN-TV that he was on his way to work at a second job as a security guard at Illinois Institute of Technology when he was approached by three people who tried to hold him up.

She said it was the first time he had to fire his weapon.

The offender was transported to Mount Sinai in unknown condition.

The CPD detention aide was not injured in the incident.
