Watch Above: Mayor Lightfoot announces new investments in Auburn Gresham and North Lawndale on Monday

CHICAGO — The City of Chicago is investing $11 million in projects on the west and south sides as part of a program to promote development in underserved communities, Mayor Lightfoot announced Monday.

The projects include the “Auburn Gresham Healthy Lifestyle Hub” and the “North Lawndale Surgical and Ambulatory Care Center,” which were finalists in a community-led and foundation-backed neighborhood revitalization effort called the “Chicago Prize.”

“These developments have been months and years in the making, and I am thrilled to see
them come to fruition,” Mayor Lightfoot said in a statement.

Located at 839 W. 79th Street, the $12.4 million Healthy Lifestyle Hub project led by the Greater Auburn Gresham Development Corporation will renovate a vacant building to provide additional healthcare resources to residents in the neighborhood.

Mount Sinai Hospital’s $12.3 million Surgical and Ambulatory Care Center will also address health-based needs, and include a new surgical center in addition to community-oriented spaces.

According to the city, the additional funding will allow the projects to become a reality, and they in turn could become commercial anchors for additional investment in their neighborhoods.

The city’s contribution is part of a $750 million initiative meant to promote investment in 10 communities on the south and west side called INVEST South/West. This includes $250 million on business development and $500 in infrastructure improvements.
