HAMMOND, Ind. — Two students were shot outside Hammond Central High School Friday afternoon, with one suspect, also identified to be a student in custody, according to police.

Police said officers responded to the high school in the 5900 block of Calumet Avenue at approximately 2:25 p.m. and found two Hammond Central students shot.

The students’ injuries are not life threatening and were transported to nearby hospitals in stable condition.

The suspects, also fellow students, were captured on surveillance footage and fled the scene after the shooting. At least one suspect, identified as a juvenile, is currently in custody.

Teacher Angela Herrera described the harrowing moments.

“The panic is all the students hearing it, that something is happening, that someone has a gun and the stampedes that kind of run through the hallway and such. Trauma would be seeing blood on the floor and knowing that was from a gunshot wound,” Herrera said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Hammond police at 219-852-2989.
