CHICAGO — A high-rise apartment building caught fire in the city’s South Shore neighborhood Thursday morning, though no injuries were reported.

According to the Chicago Fire Department, the high-rise apartment near the 6700 block of South Shore Drive caught fire on the 10th floor just after 9:30 a.m. No sprinklers were inside the building. Fortunately, Chicago firefighters were able to prevent the loss of life.

“We were able to direct streamlines from the ground up to the 10th floor to extinguish the main body of fire, said CFD Deputy Fire Commissioner Marc Ferman.

Crews credited the lack of wind off the lake as a factor in quickly extinguishing the blaze, while firefighters went door-to-door to ensure residents were safe.

Fredrinia Adair is a resident of the high-rise building.

“This lady, she was knocking at the door, and I went to knock as fast as I could,” said Adair, who, along with other residents at 6730 S. South South Drive, checked on elderly neighbors.

Ten years ago, in 2012, amid another fire at the building, two people died and others were injured. City building inspectors then ordered building ownership to upgrade fire prevention systems inside the high-rise building.

“We didn’t have any issues with their systems. The fire alarm panel seemed to be in good working order,” Ferman said. “We were able to get out announcements and the PA system worked.”
