CHICAGO —  A man was injured after a carjacking turned into a shootout on Interstate 57.

The incident happened around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday in the southbound lanes of I-57 near 119th Street. State police say two vehicles bumped and pulled to the right side of the expressway.

A man exited one of the vehicles and displayed a handgun, attempting a carjacking.

Police said the man in the other vehicle had a concealed carry permit from Texas. Shots were exchanged with the offender, and the victim was shot four times: once in the upper left chest, once in the upper right chest and twice in the right knee, according to police.

The victim’s car was stolen and later recovered at 145th and Harrison in Posen.

The victim was taken to Christ Medical Center alert and conscious. A passenger in the victim’s vehicle escaped unharmed.

Police are searching for the carjacking suspect, and at least one accomplice who got away in the suspect’s vehicle. No one is in custody.
