SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel wrapped up his two-day trip to Puerto Rico on Saturday.

The mayor’s Chicago delegation — which included U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez — got first-hand insight into current island conditions Saturday when a rock slide halted the group’s tour. As much as 20 percent of the island is still without power after being throttled by Hurricane Maria six months ago.

Emanuel experienced rain and mud Saturday as he continued to try to highlight the island’s plight on his press tour.

“There’s a resiliency and a resolve of the people,” Emanuel said, “to not just rebuild but to make something better.”

San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz praised Chicago’s response to the hurricane, which included more than 5,000 pounds of donated goods. Cruz said a truck of supplies arrived from Chicago just five days after the hurricane struck.

Cruz estimates the island still won’t be fully powered until August.
