A man from Chicago rescued his girlfriend from Lake Michigan, but then he slipped beneath the water and never resurfaced.

It happened Saturday near Michigan City as Ron Wood Jr. and seven friends shut off their boat’s engine and decided to take a swim.

A rescuer says the water was so cold, the swimmers could barely breathe.

Wood’s girlfriend panicked and Wood rescued her, and then jumped in to help another woman.

The Coast Guard and a passing boat rescued all the swimmers, but Wood wasn’t found.
