Frightening video captured a heated argument between a couple and ends with a toddler – caught in the middle – getting run over by a car.

According to Chicago police, a 7-year-old boy was defending his mother around 2:30 a.m. Monday near 75th and Cottage Grove after punches were thrown by the driver on an SUV. The argument, which witnesses say was over a cell phone, continued outside of the car as onlookers watch and some videotape the scene.

The boy’s mother is seen shouting at the driver. First she wants her phone, then she shouts, “He tried to throw my baby!”

But the video clearly shows the driver, 46-year-old Joseph Fults, handing over the 8-month-old baby girl to the woman.

But the fight only heats up and things go from bad to worse in an instant.

The child’s mother repeatedly hits the driver perhaps unaware her toddler is hardly standing outside of and awfully close to the moving car.

The baby got under the car and the driver drove off, running over the child with his back tire. It is unclear if he knew the child was there.

Fults is facing battery charges and remains in jail tonight on a $100,000 bond.

The baby girl is said to have suffered only bruises.
