EVANSTON, Ill. — Evanston police are investigating an accident that sent two people to the hospital and left a local business badly damaged.

Witnesses described a police chase in which a Dodge Charger hipped the curb and crashed into Freshies, a deli near the intersection of Sherman Avenue and Davis Street.  Police say an officer tried to make a traffic stop at about 6:30 p.m. Friday and the driver sped off and struck a silver BMW and then crashed into the restaurant, which was closed.

A 25-year-old female passenger was pinned inside the Charger and had to be cut from wreckage by firefighters. She suffered minor injuries.

The 18-year-old driver of the Charger was arrested.  Police say he suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Officers found a gun and a small amount of marijuana in the car.

Charges are pending.
