CHICAGO — the brother of a black man killed by a white Chicago police officer over the weekend was released from Cook County jail today, after an anonymous donor posted $50,000 bond.

28-year-old Michael Beal of Indianapolis was arrested Saturday.

His younger brother Joshua Beal was shot and killed by an off-duty Chicago police officer. Michael was charged with assaulting an officer in the aftermath.

Michael’s family welcomed him outside the Cook County jail.

“He’s all about family,” Michael’s sister Cordney Boxley told WGN News. “He’ll help whoever, whenever. If you need it, you got it.”

The fatal encounter started as a dispute over a parked car.

Joshua Beal was riding in a funeral procession for his recently killed cousin when his family’s car pulled over in front of a firehouse in Chicago’s Mount Greenwood neighborhood on the Far South Side.

Authorities say Beal pulled a gun and pointed it at police.  A photo surfaced of Beal holding the gun.

The 25-year-old was shot multiple times.

According to prosecutors, seconds after Joshua Beal was shot, Michael Beal tackled one of the officers, put him in a headlock and threatened to kill him.

Michael Beal was charged with felony aggravated battery of a police officer and held on $500,000 bail.

The incident touched off racially charged clashes between black protesters and police supporters in the largely white neighborhood of Mount Greenwood.

Black Lives Matter Chicago activists say they want more answers.

“We want to know (about) the officers involved in the shooting,” said activist Kofi Ademola.  “Is there any other evidence?  Any videos that are going to surface? And we want to make sure that they`re brought to charges. We’ve seen too many cases, outside of the Laquan McDonald case. where there`s no charges, no liability, no accountability.”

No funeral arrangements have been made for Joshua Beal yet.
