The Highland Park City Council Monday night approved a waiver allowing a neon sign to stay on at Madame Zuzu’s Tea Shop in the North Shore suburb.

Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan is the shop’s owner, which opened its doors in the fall of 2012.

Corgan said a misunderstanding of city ordinances led to the sign, which takes up a good portion of the shop’s front window, to be installed.

Highland Park laws would’ve restricted the sign’s size to six square feet.  Zuzu’s neon sign is 49-square-feet.

Corgan says the sign is instrumental in marketing the shop on social media, because many people who visit take pictures of the sign outside and post them online.

Corgan says he’s pleased with the council’s decision.
