Applications for housing in Ford Heights open

FORD HEIGHTS, Ill. — The wait is over.

For the first time since 2009, families who need homes could file applications for one location in Ford Heights on Tuesday.

Hundreds of low-income families, the elderly and the disabled applied for spots at the Vera Yates Family Housing at 1055 Berkeley.

There were 26 newly rehabbed units available.

Open enrollment ended at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

Budget cutbacks and limited resources have hurt public housing and subsidies for low-income families and renters.
