AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. — A public school district in Virginia canceled classes Friday because of backlash over an assignment involving the Islamic faith.

A high school teacher had students do a calligraphy assignment, where they wrote in Arabic.  The statement translated to: “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.”

Parents were outraged.

“I will not have my children sit under a woman who indoctrinates them with the Islam religion when I am a Christian, and I’m going to stand behind Christ,” parent Kimberly Herndon told WTVR. She also posted about the assignment on Facebook, and it has been shared over 875 times.

The district said it got so many complaints, it had to close as a precaution.

All sporting events are also canceled this weekend.
