GARY, Ind. — All westbound lanes of the Borman Expressway were shut down near Gary in northwest Indiana after a semi-truck crashed and caught on fire early Tuesday morning.
The accident happened at about 1 a.m. Tuesday when a semi pulling a box trailer was westbound on I-80/94 at the 7.9-mile marker in the right lane when for unknown reasons the semi went off the roadway. The semi hit a cement pillar, went airborne coming to rest across the middle lanes and caught fire under the Chase Street overpass.
The driver was able to escape before the semi became fully engulfed and he was not injured.
Westbound traffic is shut down and being diverted off onto Broadway. Traffic stuck in between are being turned around and exiting at Grant Street.
