Alderwoman: Bike owners should pay annual fee of $25

A Chicago alderwoman wants the city to force bicycle owners to register their bikes, just like cars, and pay an annual fee.

Third Ward Alderwoman Pat Dowell says $25 a year would be fair, and as a revenue generator, it would be better than raising city taxes on cable TV.

Dowell also wants to require all bike owners to take a safety class.

But Mayor Emanuel says, charging fees wouldn’t be compatible with his push to make Chicago a bike-friendly city.

So bike registration is effectively dead.
