Some Chicago aldermen are publicly opposing Mayor Emanuel’s plan to revise Chicago’s parking meter lease to include free Sunday parking in the city’s neighborhoods.

The Emanuel plan would, in return, extend night-time meter hours in the Loop and Near North Side.

Lincoln Park alderwoman Michele Smith says free Sunday parking may sound good to drivers, but it would be awful for community businesses; she says people would fill those spaces on Saturday night, leave their cars until Monday morning, and make it virtually impossible for shoppers to find parking spaces.
