CHICAGO —A semi traveling east on I-90 early Sunday ran into several stopped vehicles, causing a multi-vehicle crash that sent nine people to the hospital, according to the Illinois State Police.

In a statement, the ISP said the truck failed to stop before striking the vehicles on the Kennedy near Harlem Avenue around 12:30 a.m. Sunday. Three SUVs, a pickup and a sedan were involved in the chain crash.

The Chicago Fire Department said over a dozen people were injured, and four refused medical attention. Among the nine people sent to area hospitals, one sustained serious injuries, the ISP said.

The truck driver received a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid collision, and the ISP said alcohol and drugs are not believed to have been a factor.
