GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. --  An elderly man from Grand Rapids, Mich., has finally met his son after discovering a letter he believes was hidden by his since-departed wife for decades.

According to FOX17 in West Michigan, Tony Trapani, 81, always wanted a child, and tried all his life to have one. But he thought it was something he'd never achieved.

That's until Trapani found a letter that was sent by the child’s mother back in 1959 that told him of his then 5-year-old son. That son is now 61.

Trapani told FOX17 his wife at the time must have intercepted the letter and hid it from him for decades. He said he found the letter when he was cleaning up his deceased wife's file cabinets.

"I have a little boy,” the letter reportedly reads. “He is five years old now. What I’m trying to say Tony is he is your son. He was born November 13th, 1953.”

Meanwhile, the now-61-year-old son, Samuel Childress, said he always suspected his father got the letter, but thought the man didn’t want anything to do with him.

Father and son met for the first time Sunday.
