CHICAGO — The relatives of the man who died in a house fire in West Pullman are sharing their emotional memories about him.
Jimmy Shearrill, 79, was asleep in an upstairs bedroom when flames erupted Wednesday morning at 118th Street and Perry. Avenue.
He became trapped.
A firefighter who tried to rescue him fell through the floor, and that triggered a “mayday” alert. The firefighter appeared to be okay, and was treated and released.
The victim’s niece, Lekeya Shearrill, says her uncle was very welcoming and a great story teller.
His brother, Edgar Shearrill, says his sibling was a nice, jolly person.
Three adults escaped to safety, including a nephew who jumped out of a second-floor window.
Relatives say smoke alarms did go off.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
