A young boy has died of injuries following an accidental shooting.

The child's identity was confirmed by a Cook County medical examiner as 6-year-old Michael Cattron of the 18 W100 block of 14th Street in Villa Park.

The DuPage County Sheriff's office is investigating the incident. They responded to a call earlier Saturday of an injured child following an apparently accidental gunshot wound.

According to the Chicago Tribune, exactly how Michael was shot was not immediately clear. Some family members said the boy accidentally shot himself, while others said a relative of his accidentally shot him.

Cattron was pronounced dead at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Loyola University Medical Center.

The Chicago Tribune contributed to this report.
