5-year-old girl wounded in afternoon shooting on the Northwest Side

CHICAGO — A 5-year-old girl was shot in her ankle as shots rang out in the Albany Park neighborhood Sunday afternoon, according to police.

Police said in a statement that a male shooter began firing rounds at another male around 1:30 p.m. in the 4600 block of North Monticello Avenue. A bullet struck the 5-year-old girl in her ankle as she stood in a nearby gangway.

The girl was taken to Swedish Covenant Hospital in Ravenswood.

No one was in custody.
