CICERO, III — A 5-year-old boy and an elderly man were killed in an apartment fire in Cicero.

The boy’s mother and other neighbors identify them as David Castellanos III and his grandfather David Castellanos Sr.

The fire was reported after midnight Tuesday at a two-story apartment building in the 4700 block of West 12th Place. Fire crews arrived to the scene to find the back of the building fully engulfed.

Several residents made it out safely and alerted crews that the boy and his grandfather were still inside.

Officials found the boy unresponsive in a second-floor unit.

A Cicero spokesman said the boy had a faint pulse when he was found but attempts to save him failed and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The interior search for the elderly man was called off due to the deteriorating conditions of the fire. His body was recovered several hours later.

The fire chief said the 30 mile per hour winds along with the amount of fire coming out of the building made it difficult to fight.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

There was some minor damage to another building.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
