EVANSTON, Ill. — Police said three people were shot in Evanston Thursday afternoon.

The shooting happened near Howard Street and Custer Avenue around 3 p.m. Evanston police said the victims were in a red SUV on Custer Avenue approaching Howard Street in front of 112 Custer Ave. when the shooting occurred.

Firearms evidence indicated that a rifle was used in the shooting. The victims’ vehicle traveled across Howard into Chicago where it was involved in a minor crash with a fixed object, according to police. The offending vehicle fled from the area.

They said three men, ranging from late teens to early 20s suffered gunshot wounds. They are all expected to survive. Injuries include one with minor injuries and one was shot in an extremity. A third victim had multiple gunshot wounds to his body, went into surgery and is in critical condition but is expected to survive. They are all receiving treatment at St. Francis Hospital.

No one in custody and no weapons were recovered

Shooting is believed to be gang-related. Police believe the three victims are gang members.
