CHESTERTON, Ind. — Three people were taken into custody after a police pursuit and a crash that closed the Indiana Toll Road on Wednesday.
Around 2 p.m., Valparaiso police got a call about three men trying to break into cars in the area. An officer tried to pull over the vehicle involved. They said it was stolen from Illinois, and a police pursuit ensued. That police chase led to a crash on the 2900 block of Nautica Drive in Chesterton.
Three people got out of the car that was involved in the crash, and one of them stole a maintenance truck while a worker was setting up cones to help direct traffic. Police said the worker tried to stop that happening, but the suspect backed up quickly into a semi truck stopped in traffic. Police said that was when shots were fired by two Indiana State Police troopers and Porter County deputies.
Police said the suspect put the car in drive and hit another semi truck before he got out of the maintenance truck and ran below the Toll Road where he was taken into custody.
It is unclear if the suspect was actually hit by a bullet. However, he was hospitalized and has since been released.
No one else was injured.
