A rash of shootings overnight has killed three men and left at least 17 wounded.

27-year-old Darrin Rodgers was shot in the chest at 69th and Cornell, becoming the first homicide victim in the city this month.

The shooting came just a few minutes after midnight.

Another incident in the University Village neighborhood killed one man and injured two others.

Police say the man killed, 19-year-old Tyrell Jackson, was a known gang member.

The other victims were hit in the thigh and are hospitalized in stable condition.

The third fatality was 23-year-old Pierre Howelett. He was shot several times in the 1900 block of South Drake.

Police officers wounded a suspect as he ran off after being ordered to stop near 89th and Brandon.

A Fraternal Order of Police spokesman says the suspect grabbed a chrome object from his waistband and officers fired fearing it was a gun.

A witness told reporters the suspect raised his hands above his head, but police and the FOP dispute that.

No gun was recovered.

The suspect suffered non-life threatening injuries.

All these shootings came just as the department released statistics showing homicides are down 42 percent during the first four months of 2013.

The murder total through April was 93.

That’s the lowest for the first four months of a year since 1963.
