3 dead, including shooter, at Indiana supermarket

Three people are dead after a shooting at an Elkhart, Indiana supermarket Wednesday night.

A man in his early 20’s entered a Martin’s supermarket on East Bristol Street just after 10 p.m and shot a shopper believed to be in her late teens or early 20’s and a supermarket employee in her early 40’s Sgt. Trent Smith of the Indiana State Police said.

Elkhart city police responded very quickly and entered  the supermarket and shot the shooter after he pointed a weapon at police. The  shooter was killed after officers exchanged rounds with him.

The shooter had a large caliber handgun and a large knife with him Sgt Smith said.

The two women killed were dead at the scene. There was no indication the man knew either of the victims.

Martin’s Super Markets posted a message on Facebook ” Thank you to our community for your thoughts and prayers tonight. We will comment further when we can do so responsibly and appropriately”
