UPDATE (10/29/19) – Police arrested Reginald Carter on suspicion of murder and arson.

Original Story:

GARY, Ind. — Three people died after a house fire in Gary Friday.

The fire broke out around 11 a.m. Friday at a home near 20th Avenue and Noble Street.

The coroner’s office said the bodies were burned so badly,  identifications will have to be confirmed through dental records.

But relatives identified the victims as Nefretiri Jones, 53, her son Dwayne Jones, 34, and her niece Yoasha Carter, 24.

It is another devastating development for a family that’s been touched before by tragedy. Carter’s sister told WGN News that Carter escaped an apartment fire on Christmas Eve in 2016. That fire killed two of her own children and their cousin.

That fire was ruled an arson and remains unsolved.

The cause of Friday’s fire is still under investigation. The ATF and the state fire marshal are assisting the fire department and police.
