The women told officers they were attacked and assaulted by a man with a hammer while on the trail. The attacker was on a grey bike, riding east when he launched his hammer attacks.

The women were transported to the Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital for non-life threatening injuries, and have since been released.

Police have released a vague description of the man, saying he’s clean-shaven and in his 50’s, wearing a Green Bay Packers hat, green sweatshirt and dirty jeans.

The attack is being investigated.

Crystal Lake police said they have additional officers to patrol the bike paths in the city, both on foot and on bicycle.
