Two women were seriously injured in a fireworks accident in the West Lawn neighborhood.

It happened Thursday evening in West Lawn Park, at 66th and Keeler.

Police say 32-year-old Kristina Perez had her left foot severed by the force of the explosion; her sister-in-law, Lorena Perez, suffered fourth-degree burns on her left leg.

The women say they were watching the fireworks when they saw a bright light coming at them, then felt the explosion.

Both are in serious condition at Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn.

Police say the fireworks were not sanctioned by the city.  But the women had been going to the annual display traditionally on Independence Day over the past several years.
