CHICAGO — One Metra worker was killed and another injured in an explosion on the Northwest Side on Saturday.

The men were working in the 4500 block of West Byron Street when a tank on a truck exploded about 11:45 a.m., officials said.

In all, 17 workers were on the scene Saturday to finish a project that began last week, according to a Metra spokeswoman.

A 46-year-old man with 17 years in the railroad industry died in the explosion, officials said on the scene Saturday. His name was being withheld pending family notification.

A second man was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where his condition had stabilized.

An investigation is underway.
