LAKE GENEVA, Wis. — The Department of Natural Resources is warning about thin ice across southern Wisconsin after the death of an Illinois man whose snowmobile went into Lake Geneva.
The DNR says the man's snowmobile hit open water in the middle of the lake about 9 p.m. Sunday.
Another man jumped off his machine and stayed on the ice. He called for help, but it took about an hour for rescuers to reach him. DNR Warden Juan Gomez says that because of all the open water in the center of the lake, they didn't want to put any emergency responders at risk until they could prepare.
The first victim died at the scene. The other was hospitalized because of his low core temperature.
Names and hometowns have not been released.
