One person was killed Tuesday when a twin-engine airplane crashed in rural Will County.

The crash happened just before 3 p.m. in a corn field just East of Midewin National Tallgrass Praire, South of Manhattan.

Will County Dep. Chief Ken Kaupas tells WGN that the pilot, the only person on board the craft, was found dead in the wreckage.

The pilot was an out-of-state contractor for Enbridge Oil Pipeline and was scheduled to arrive at Joliet airport to pick up passengers.

“We do know he was overdue and had not communicated with the party,” said Kaupas.  There was no distress call reported.

The Will County Coroner was on the scene Tuesday afternoon to retrieve the pilot’s body.  No identification was provided by Will County, saying next-of-kin was not yet notified.

Will County Sheriffs Department will secure the scene through the night until the FAA arrives Wednesday to investigate the damage in the daylight.
