UIC orthodontics resident resident among 2 killed in wrong-way crash on I-355

LISLE, Ill. — Two people were killed and three others critically injured after a wrong-way crash on I-355.

The accident happened around 11 p.m. Thursday on I-355 near Maple Avenue in Lisle.

Police said Robert Velazco, 36, was driving south in the northbound lanes of I-355 when he hit a black Honda head-on causing a multi-car crash.

Velazco died at the scene, according to officials.

Dr. Arshad Mohammed, 32, was behind the wheel of the Honda. He later died at Good Samaritan Hospital.

Family members told WGN News that Mohammed was on his way home from a networking event when the crash happened.

Mohammed was an orthodontics resident at UIC pursuing his master’s degree. He graduated last year from the university’s dental school, where he received several awards.

Ruth Romen-Sangbaan, 66, Oscar Ramiero, 24, and Bienvenido Sangbaan, 66, remain in critical condition.

State police are investigating the crash and are waiting on toxicology reports.
