WILMETTE, Ill. — One man is dead and another injured after a boat exploded in Wilmette Harbor on Saturday morning.

The boat caught fire about 8:05 a.m. Saturday and then exploded while at a dock in the harbor, according to the Wilmette Fire Department. Police said the incident appears to be accidental and happened on a private boat.

A 67-year-old Arlington Heights man who was on the boat died, according to authorities. Fire officials said he got trapped on the boat when the fire broke out. Divers recovered his body. An autopsy is pending.

A 74-year-old Arlington Heights man who was standing on the dock suffered minor injuries and was taken to Evanston Hospital.

The men’s names are being withheld pending family notification.

It was not immediately clear what caused the fire and explosion.
