A man opens-fire inside a supermarket with a semi-automatic handgun, and kills two women and narrowly misses another, before police take his life.

Authorities say 22 year-old Shawn Walter Bair pulled-out the .40 caliber weapon at the Martin’s supermarket at 3900 East Bristol Steet in Elkhart, Indiana around 10pm Wednesday.

They say he killed a 20 year-old store employee, and a 44 year-old female shopper. The 20 year-old victim was a stocker, and only worked there a short time.

They also say he confronted two other workers, but both were able to escape.

Officers responded within minutes, and shot and killed Bair. They say they recovered his gun and a large hunting knife.

Police say the recent, mass shootings forced them to change their tactics. Two officers went right into the store rather than wait for back-up.

“The bravery, and the quick response of the Elkhart City Police Department saved lives. There’s no doubt,” said Sgt. Trent Smith of the Indiana State Police.

Most of the incident was captured on surveillance video.

Authorities say Bair may have had some type of relationship with one of the victims, and it appears this was a planned assault.

Martin’s Super Markets posted a message on Facebook “Thank you to our community for your thoughts and prayers tonight. We will comment further when we can do so responsibly and appropriately”

Police say Bair lived just a few miles from the grocery store.

Investigators are still looking into Bair’s background and how he got the gun.
