- Risk factors – such as early single sport specialization, eating disorders, self-image issues, training for a special event
- Symptoms – fatigue, sleep problems, anxiety, depression, decreasing performance
- Medical evaluation – comprehensive exam, possible blood tests, dietary journal, questionnaire about mood and behavior.
- Treatment – activity modification for 3 to 5 weeks followed by gradual return to activity, increase in calories, psychotherapy or counseling
