Grandma’s Spaghetti Sauce

1 lb ground beef
1 lb ground or cup up Italian sausage (hot or mild)
3 28 oz cans diced tomatoes (San Marzano)
1 small can tomato paste
1 15 oz can tomato sauce
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 medium yellow onion, chopped
1/4 cup sugar
1-2 Tbs Italian seasonings
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp garlic powder
2 bay leaves
salt and pepper to taste

In a large pot, brown ground beef and Italian sausage at medium heat. Drain and set aside. In same pot, saute onion and garlic until translucent. Once onion/garlic is cooked, place beef and sausage back into pot. Add diced tomatoes and tomato sauce, stirring until ingredients are well mixed. Add remaining ingredients with the exception of tomato paste. Mix well. Place burner on medium heat until sauce begins to bubble (approximately 10 minutes). For next 3-4 hours, cook sauce on low, covered, stirring occasionally. Approximately 30 minutes before serving, add tomato past, salt and pepper to taste. Serve sauce over past of your choice.
