Food is a big part of keeping diabetes under control, but it’s not always easy to navigate how to make smart choices. So we checked in with registered dietitian and chef Sara Haas to get some ideas on how to get started on the right track.  She showed us a great oatmeal recipe that can really give diabetics a boost.

 

Hearty Oatmeal Bowl

Ingredients

1 cup water

1/2 cup old fashioned oats

dash salt

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon packed brown sugar (optional)

1/4 cup chopped nuts (walnuts)

1 tablespoon chia seeds

1/2 cup fresh or frozen berries

Instructions

  1. Add the water to a small saucepan and bring to a boil. Stir in the oats and salt. Cook, stirring often until thickened, about 5 minutes. (Microwave – Combine all ingredients in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high heat for about 3 minutes (cook time depends on heat of microwave, so times may vary).
  2. Stir in ground cinnamon and brown sugar then top with nuts, seeds and berries.
  3. Enjoy!
