    CHICAGO — The Chicago Teacher’s Union is taking its grievances to state lawmakers. Members loaded buses early Wednesday morning and headed for Springfield to lobby for a series of measures aimed at pumping more money into the school system. CTU wants lawmakers to move on a millionaire tax to fund public education, as well as new funding formulas for schools. Union officials are already threatening to strike over a contract dispute with Chicago Public Schools.

    Commissioner Pushes For Animal Abuse Registry

    Cook County officials are pushing for animal abuse  registry. It would prohibit convicted animal abusers from buying or adopting animals for 15 years or more after their conviction. The ordinance would also require pet shops, shelters and rescues to check the registry before selling or adopting out animals. Failure to register would result in a 2-thousand dollar fine.

    A high school student in Ohio died following a freak accident at a basketball game. Noah Lear, 16, was attempting a slam dunk back in February when the back board, rim and post all came down on him. He was still able to talk after the accident and even called out for his mother.     CHICAGO — Three people are dead, seven others wounded in shootings around Chicago since Tuesday. The latest shooting happened Tuesday night near 64th and Kedzie. A man was driving in an SUV when someone in another vehicle shot him in the head. That caused his SUV to drive into a barrier and flip over on its side.   • South Side Catholic school reopens after lead discovered

    CHICAGO — A Catholic school on the south side reopens this morning after it was shut down because of high lead levels. Classes were canceled for several days last week, at Holy Angels Catholic School when lead was discovered in an older section of the building. Today, students are expected to be relocated to the newer section of the school where testing has confirmed there is no lead.

  • Suburban teen gets probation for punching, yelling slurs at Sikh man

    WHEATON, Ill.  — A suburban Chicago teenager charged with a hate crime after yelling racial slurs and punching a Sikh man has been sentenced to two years’ probation. The DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office said Wednesday that the teen also was ordered to pay nearly $5,000 in restitution and perform 200 hours of community service, including by serving the Sikh community, after pleading guilty to a felony hate crime charge.   • Suspected serial killer charged with 5 more murders

    GARY, Ind. — A suspected serial killer accused of killing two women in Indiana, is now charged with the murders of five more women. Darren Vann was arrested in 2014, a day after one victim was found strangled, inside a motel in Hammond. At the time, Vann reportedly confessed to killing six other women whose bodies were found in abandoned buildings throughout Gary. He now faces seven murder charges. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
