CHICAGO — Four people are dead and a woman is in critical condition following an apartment shooting Saturday night on the Northwest Side, Chicago police said.

At around 5:30 p.m., authorities were dispatched to the 6700 block of West Irving Park Road on a shots fired call.

Five people were reportedly shot inside an apartment building. Four people died, three men and one woman.

Chicago police said  67-year-old man, a retired construction worker, known to the apartment, shot four people as they were eating inside a residence.

"When he walked into that neighbor's apartment, there were four people at the table eating dinner." First Deputy Superintendent Anthony Riccio said.  "For reasons we don’t yet know, he opened fire and killed them.”

Police said the man then went upstairs and shot a woman. The woman was transported in critical condition.

A Chicago police spokesman previously told us all the victims died, but later corrected that information.

Police said all the victims are in their 40's.

Residents in the building said the man has had problems with neighbors before. Police say everyone in the building knew him and he is known to have anger problems.

The man was reportedly taken into custody. A weapon was recovered at the scene.

Saturday night, Mayor Lori Lightfoot called the shooting "devastating and almost unfathomable."

"We mourn the loss, honor the victims, and continue the hard but necessary work of keeping our neighborhoods safe, and taking guns out of the hands of those who are mentally infirm," Lightfoot said.
