Police: Passenger grabbed wheel, caused tour bus to crash in Porter County

PORTER COUNTY, Ind. — A passenger traveling on a tour bus that crashed Thursday in Porter County, Ind. is accused of grabbing the wheel of the bus and causing the crash.

Indiana State Police said the private charter bus was traveling on Interstate 94 near Chesterton around 6:30 p.m. Thursday. A passenger aboard the bus, Pedro Rodriquez, 36, of Chicago, made his way to the front of the bus “where he grabbed the wheel in an apparent attempt to gain control,” police said in a statement.

The bus swerved out of its lane and hit a semi-truck. Both vehicles ran off the road.

According to police Rodriquez and three other people reported pain following the crash but only Rodriquez was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Rodriquez is being held on charges including aggravated battery,

Police said the bus was traveling to Chicago from Benton Harbor, Michigan, and had 51 passengers aboard.
