2-year-old dies after falling from third story window on West Side

CHICAGO — A child died Thursday after falling from a third-story window on Chicago’s West Side.

Police said the 2-year-old boy fell from the window of a building in the 1500 block of South Saint Louis Street in the city's North Lawndale neighborhood around 8:20 p.m. Thursday.

A source tells WGN the boy's 36-year-old mother had burned some food while cooking and opened a living room window before returning to the kitchen.

The mother came back to the living room to find the window screen missing. She ran to the window and discovered that the 2-year-old had fallen out of it.

Police said the boy had sustained blunt force trauma to the head. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition where he was later pronounced dead.

The boy has been identified as Max Alexander.

The investigation is ongoing.
