JOLIET, Ill. — Four people, including two young children, were found shot to death inside a home in Joliet in what appears to be a murder-suicide.
Police arrived to a house in the 500 block of Whitley Avenue around 10:20 p.m. Wednesday and found a man, a woman and their two young children shot to death on the second floor of the home.
A family member identified them as 28-year old Jacquelon Gaskin, the children's biological father Brandyn Lee, 6-year old Gianna and 1-year old Giovanni.
"I never seen this coming," Gaskin's stepfather, Terrance Brooks, said. "I saw my daughter on Saturday. She was smiling. Same with my grandchildren. We did not expect this at all."
Gaskin's mother said she believes Lee shot and killed his family before turning the gun on himself.
"He was a controlling type of guy. I think she was trying to break away from that, and I think that was the trigger," Rusha Brooks said. "That was his last bit of control, to take everybody away."
Family believes Lee was upset over a breakup with the children's mother.
"She had re-enrolled in school. She was trying to get her nursing degree finished. I think he felt that he was losing her," Brooks said.
Neighbors said they were stunned by the news.
"I just heard a loud scream. A scream that was terrifying. A scream that would bring you to your attention and come outside," Sarah Foxx, a neighbor, said.
An investigation is ongoing, but police said no one is being sought in connection with the deaths.
Police said there is no threat to the public.
