Suspect armed with knife shot by Addison police

ADDISON, Ill. — Addison police shot a suspect who they say had a knife early today.  Police say that suspect is a woman in her 50's.

The Addison police chief says the woman is in surgery, but should survive.

The incident happened in the 200 block of Mill Road.  The man the woman was living with called police around 4:30 this morning to say the suspect was hitting him and that she had large knives, and she was armed and dangerous.

While entering the apartment police encountered the woman armed with a knife.

Police say the suspect did not comply with requests to drop the knife and advanced on the officers. One officer fired her weapon and shot the suspect.

The suspect was transported to an area hospital.

The officer was not hurt.  Addison police chief Bill Hayden says officers ran to help the woman who had been shot, and probably saved her life.

The shooting is under investigation.  The DuPage County Major Crimes Task Force is in charge.
