2 Chicago officers injured while responding to shooting
CHICAGO — Two Chicago police officers were injured in a crash while responding to a shooting.
The shooting happened around 2 a.m. Wednesday at 114th and Carpenter streets in the Morgan Park neighborhood. A man was shot in the back and the leg while trying to run for cover.
The officers were en route when their vehicle veered off the road and hit a tree.
The officers are reported to be in good condition. The shooting victim is in serious condition.
Police have arrested a suspect in connection with the shooting, and say they recovered a weapon.
“It was cars coming up all night long. Teenagers going in and out,” Sharon Wyche, a neighbor, said. “It was very terrifying. My mom almost hurt her hip because I grabbed her out of bed. I was like, ‘Mom, they’re shooting!'”
The shooting happened at a home that neighbors say was recently sold and converted to a short-term rental.
The Airbnb site listed it at $250 a night, complete with a newly remodeled interior and game room. However, an Airbnb spokesperson said they have never had a reservation at the address, and guests booked the location directly from the homeowner. Airbnb said the listing has been removed from their website.
Neighbors said the home has been used for parties where fights have been happening night after night.
“The kids are coming because it’s a safe haven,” Wyche said. “They can come over here, unfortunately they can do illegal drugs, and it looked like strippers going over there also.”
