Netflix announced Tuesday it will debut a new series based on the life of slain Tejano singer Selena.

On Facebook, Netflix’s announcement said:

“Selena Quintanilla-Pérez’s incredible life story is coming to Netflix as a scripted series! Selena: The Series was developed alongside and will be executive produced by The Quintanilla family.”

The Hollywood Reporter said the series will be a “coming of age story” and Selena’s sister Suzette Quintanilla and Selena’s father Abraham Quintanilla Jr. will be among the executive producers. The singer shot and killed at age 23 by her former employee Yolanda Saldívar on March 31, 1995.

In a statement to the Hollywood Reporter, Suzette Quintanilla said:

“Selena will always have a lasting place in music history and we feel great responsibility to do justice to her memory. With this series, viewers will finally get the full history of Selena, our family, and the impact she has had on all of our lives. … We are excited to partner with Campanario and Netflix to give fans a never-before-seen glimpse at our story and highlight why Selena will remain a legend for generations to come.”

A date for the premiere is not yet known.
