89-year-old woman killed, another injured after violent domestic situation in Park Manor

CHICAGO -- A six-hour long police standoff ended with an 89-year-old woman dead and another woman wounded after a violent domestic situation on the South Side.

WGN has learned the two female victims, and the 19-year-old man accused of shooting them, are related.

Around 1:30 a.m. Monday, police received a call of a domestic disturbance at an apartment at 71st and Prairie in the Park Manor neighborhood.

When officers arrived to the scene, they found a 39-year-old woman shot in the face and lying in a stairwell. She was transported to the University of Chicago Hospital in stable condition.  She is expected to survive.

Police said the 19-year-old man who shot the woman had barricaded himself on the second-floor of the apartment building.

Just before 8 a.m., the man exited the building and surrendered to police. Shortly after, an 89-year-old woman was found dead inside the building with a gunshot wound. Police believe the 19-year-old is responsible for her death.

Friends called the woman the matriarch of the family and a staple in the community.

A weapon was recovered from the scene. Police said the man has a history of mental illness.  He was taken to St. Bernard Hospital to be checked out.

Police say charges will follow.
