NILES, Ill. — Two sisters were killed in an accident involving a Cook County Sheriff's Office squad car in Niles Thursday morning.

Police said a Honda sedan was traveling southbound on Harlem just before 6 a.m. when it collided with a squad car traveling eastbound on Dempster Street. The driver of the Honda, a 69-year-old woman, and the passenger, a 61-year-old woman, both died in the crash.

The Cook County Sheriff's Office said a 47-year-old officer involved in the crash is being treated at an area hospital and that his injuries are not life-threatening.

Niles police identified the driver as Ludwiga Moskal, 69, of Norridge, and her passenger as Halena Lukasik, 64, of Chicago.

The intersection of Harlem and Niles — one of the busiest in the northern suburbs — was shut down for five hours while the North Regional Major Crimes Task Force investigated the accident.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation, though police said they believe weather conditions may have been a factor in the crash.

A sheriff's office spokeswoman said the officer was not responding to a call at the time of the crash.
