EVANSTON, Ill. -- One man is dead and another critically injured after they were hit by drivers in two separate incidents in Evanston.

One happened on the border of Rogers Park at Howard and Chicago.

Police say a 66-year-old man was walking within the crosswalk when he was hit around 8:30 Wednesday night.

The driver initially fled the scene. He later turned himself into police.

He is in custody and charges are pending.

The other incident happened an hour later about 1.5 miles away at Chicago and Dempster.

Police say a 30-year-old man from Libertyville walked into the street near a bike station and a driver didn't see him.

That driver stayed with the man and was released at the scene.

The pedestrian is in critical but stable condition at Evanston Hospital.
