Brawl breaks out at vigil for woman, 21, fatally shot while fleeing group of men on South Side

CHICAGO -- A brawl broke out at a vigil for a woman who was fatally shot after being chased down on the city's South Side.

Oceana Jones, 21, was fatally shot Tuesday in the Gresham neighborhood just after 1 a.m. Chicago police said Oceanea Jones and her boyfriend were at a gas station in the 1500 block of West 79th Street, when they noticed a group of four to five men following them. They felt uneasy and the couple decided to run. At one point, Jones' boyfriend said she let go of his hand and he believed she was hiding.

Video from a corner convenient store on 79th and Justine streets shows Jones and her boyfriend walking home from the gas station. They begin to run away and four offenders are seen pursuing them.

WGN isn't revealing the boyfriend's identity, because he is a witness to the deadly shooting. He told WGN that one of the men confronted him.

"They thought I was a gang member from over here, but I wasn't. I don't gangbang," he said. "I'm not from around here. When he shot the gun at me, I ran back through this vacant lot, Oceanea said, 'No,' That's when I heard an other gunshot."

Jones had been shot in the back. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police who were standing watch during a march to remember Jones near 79th and Ashland Tuesday evening were forced to intervene after a fight broke out. The event started with prayers for peace and unity. Attendees also prayed for the killer to be brought to justice.

The boyfriend believes he and Jones were victims of an ongoing gang war in the area.

"Words can't explain. I'm heartbroken. Nobody can bring her back," he said.

Police will be looking at footage from cameras in the alley where Jones died and at the intersection where the chase began.

No one is in custody. A $5,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest.

A GoFundMe page was started to help Jones' family.
